>Vaccines effective against Delta variant
Inactivated COVID-19 vaccines developed by China curbed the spread of the Delta variant during a May outbreak in Guangzhou, a study has shown.
Led by reputed Chinese epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan, researchers from the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention found two shots of the vaccines showed an efficacy of 59% against COVID-19 caused by the Delta variant, 70.2% against moderate forms of the disease, and 100% against severe cases.
According to the research paper, the protective effect of the two-dose vaccination against the Delta strain reached 72.5% among study participants aged 40 to 59.
Vaccine efficacy was also higher in females.
Meanwhile, with an efficacy of only 13.8%, one dose of vaccine did not provide sufficient protection.
>Zhurong travels more than 1,000 meters
China's Mars rover Zhurong had traveled more than 1,000 meters on the surface of the red planet as of Monday, the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration said. The Mars rover has outlived its three-month life expectancy with all of its predetermined tasks completed.
China's Tianwen 1 Mars probe streaked down through the Martian sky on May 15, becoming the country's first probe to land on a planet other than Earth. The lander, carrying a Mars rover, touched down at its pre-selected landing area in the southern part of Utopia Planitia, a vast plain on the northern hemisphere of Mars.
Starting its exploration, Zhurong drove down from its landing platform to the Martian surface on May 22.
The CNSA added the rover will continue to move to the boundary zone between the ancient sea and land in the southern part of Utopia Planitia to carry out tasks.
The rover will suspend operations from mid-September to late October due to the anticipated disruption of its communications with Earth caused by solar electromagnetic radiation, and will then resume its mission.

>Half of world's children suffer from climate risks
About 1 billion children, nearly half the world's 2.2 billion, live in 33 countries classified as "extremely high-risk" to the impacts of climate change, a report of UNICEF, the UN Children's Emergency Fund, says.
These children face a deadly combination of exposure to multiple climate and environmental shocks with high vulnerability due to inadequate essential services, such as water, sanitation, healthcare and education, the report said.
Children living in the Central African Republic, Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau are most at-risk, threatening their health, education and protection and exposing them to deadly diseases, it said.
